Gutsy Re(My)view

New to linux? Then gutsy is for you. Actually I think there is no other linux where match to this fella for windows replacement. Gutsy is the newest in ubuntu series, code name for it's 7.10. And hell yeah ubuntu just got better was damn always right every time their new release arrive. So what's this dist bring to this world,ha? Down here a wrote anything I know about this hotties, all the good thing. At least for me and for now.

I intended to install new ubuntu release because I got some problem with my feisty. I love ubuntu. I love it like it's the only distro that exist. A love that enough to me to say that it is linux for me. Actually I never try any other dist on my comp or lap. But even the purest love sometime have a little node. My feisty work fine for me except the sound, except it wont play video when I turn on beryl or compiz. And it's quiet pain in the neck to turn off/on beryl/compiz whenever we wanna watch some porn( ; ) peace). So beside I reinstall my system, I prefer to install the new one. I got gutsy installer cd from my friend who got it from somewhere I don't know and I don't care. Then I install it right away.

Then Boom! What is it ..?.. Believe me my friend I ever saw something like it before. The almost exactly the same installation display. It's just look and feel the same with the old dapper drake. Wow ! how amazingggly boring. I think the canonical won't improve the installation method to much in recent. Okay, have to admit it that it's a lot better than the console display (I mean in nowadays!! C'mon..). Otherwise linux will never compete with the crunchy apple at the sweet windows. Word to say, I love this installation method more than the blue windows. I'ts event give you a try before you decide to acctually installed it. We called it live cd.

After the installation progress complete, that took about 16 minutes, I reboot the machine. And now it's the time to feel a virginity. It's so exciting, though I feel a little fear. Fear of being disappointed (think about your first night or time). What's new is.... Some configuration interface like the display setting were more windowsy, new repository with the latest version software, newer kernel, and the exciting compiz fusion or 3d desktop that already installed. But the really new thing that essential that gutsy bring was ..... actually nothing. That was my thought, at least for me and for now. Well, my audio doesn't sound right after the installation. I need to manually install the latest alsa driver (1.5), that I got from alsa-project site not from the repository. Until it's finally go sounding. The new open office were the same for me. But what make me exciting the most was the glossy-stably-candy-smoothly compiz-fusion. It has so many new effect, and it's stable. And when I turn on some film while the candy is on it could play nicely with the perfect picture and sound. Just like when I turn off the candy. Although I still can't make the movie picture go wobbly.

So beside the lovely compiz this gutsy guy bring was some suck..??! Not exactly.. no no I won't said that. A more windowsy interface were both an improvement and a drawback. It's what's needed by the newbies especially those who's migrate from win system. But for linux geek's... Man it suck.. It like they've to admit that win interface, look and feel are way better. Of course they won't think so, even some wins imigran think to leave their system to linux was because they want something new.

I'll tell You, some of my mate that use linux and hate windows once said to me that ubuntu was suck because it's too easy, and too windows . He said that it's not the linux way. Well I've no doubt there is many like him out there. I said to him, ubuntu wasn't that easy, you could go as hard as you will with it, and it's have less windows than your home. But than gutsy came with the new interface. Heh, that stuff shut my mouth so suddenly after make it open so wide at first.

Time to the last word.... “Ubuntu just got better” Well you can thrust this word like you do with your own hand. Just how much that “better” count ?? You have to try it and trust your feeling to answer it yourself. Eventhough the net will always be a good help. Peace and see you !

I find that Ubuntu is a really good compromise between an "it just works" environment, and something that allows a geek to go nuts on it.
Certainly, my geekiness desires a distro like Arch, but Ubuntu's tools handle me editing the text files pretty well. I can't say the same for Fedora. If your friends want something that doesn't hold their hand quite as much, they can try the alternative install CD, and do a barebones install.
Or, hey, just use Arch. Or slackware. Or whatever.

Cheers,
Nathan
